James Ritchie Sparkman papers, 1811-1935; (bulk, 1811-1904)

Consisting of correspondence, bills and receipts, indentures, accounts, inventories, tax returns, land papers, and other papers documenting Sparkman's social and business activities, particularly as a rice planter at Birdfield, Dirleton, and Northampton plantations. Slave lists include broadsides, ca. 1846, "Valuable Rice Lands and Negroes for Sale," with description of Nightingale Hall plantation; 26 Nov. 1847, slave lists for Northampton and Friendfield estates; and 24 Jan. 1859, advertising sale of Waccamaw River slaves, listing names, ages, qualifications, and noting prices paid; and list, ca. 1859, of Dirleton and Birdfield slave gangs. Also includes items re the Planter's Club on the Pee Dee, Plantersville Society, Plantersville Union Reform Club, Winyah and All Saints Agricultural Society, and Carolina Sportsman Club; estate papers of Sparkman's father-in-law, Dr. Edward Thomas Heriot (1793-1854); and inventories and appraisals of area estates and plantations. Agricultural labor materials of the Reconstruction era include agreements and accounts, 1867-1868 and 1878-1880, re expenses and payments to free laborers and wages paid transient laborers; and letters, July and Aug. 1869, from W[illia]m M. Lawton, Charleston Chamber of Commerce, to Robert Mure, New York Journal of Commerce, re the use of Chinese immigrant labor. Correspondents include John Edwards Holbrook, J.K. Paulding, Moses A. Curtis, William Harrison Scarborough, H.T. Byrd, George Seaborn, R.F.W. Allston, Milledge Luke Bonham, O.T. Porcher, W.W. Shackelford, J. Marion Sims; R.A. Kinloch, and Simon Baruch. Bound volumes include plantation journals, 1845-1864, listing slave births, deaths, purchases, and family arrangements; 1850-1857, Birdfield plantation; 1853-1859, Dirleton, formerly Richfield, plantation; 1857-1859, Birdfield and Dirleton plantations; and 1859-1861, Dirleton and Northampton plantations

Georgetown County, South Carolina plantation owner and medical doctor. James Ritchie Sparkman, son of James and Anna Sparkman, married Mary Elizabeth Heriot (1827-1912) in 1845. Sparkman served as commissioned surgeon in General W.J. Hardee's Legion during the Civil War. After the death of his father-in-law, physician Edward Thomas Heriot (1793-1854), Sparkman exchanged his plantation Birdfield for Dirleton Plantation (previously known as Richfield), a rice plantation on the Pee Dee River.
